Charles Purkis, 91, Struck by Careering Car and Crushed Against Bricks
Pinned against a pile of bricks by a careering driverless motor car that had rolled downhill, Charles Purkis, 91, of 456 Northcliffe Blve, York township, received injuries that resulted in his death, early last evening, in Toronto Western hospital.
The elderly man was on his afternoon walk when he paused to look at a building under construction at the foot of Northcliffe Blvd. The auto, owned by Richard Moulton, 493 Caledonia Rd, had been parked on the brow of the 100 foot incline. It started suddenly and was upon Mr. Purkis before he could leap to safety.
Mr. Purkis received severe head injuries. Both legs were fractured, and he was conscious only a short time. Dr. C.W. Dales, 526 Oakwood Ave ordered removal to hospital where he died.
It is not known what started the car. Coroner Dr. G.W. Clendenan has ordered an inquest on October 6.
Mr. Purkis had lived with his daughter, Mrs. A. Cash at whose home he celebrated his 91st birthday last Monday. He was born in London, Eng., and came to Canada 20 years ago. He was a member of the Church of England. He was a carpenter. Surviving are three daughters and two brothers.
